The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to international students and nonresidents filing the 1040NR who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Volunteers provide assistance with basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Individual income

$35,000 or less

  • Unemployment (Form 1099-G)

  • Scholarships and grants (Form 1098-T)
  • Health insurance through MNsure (Form 1095-A)

Prior year's tax return (if available)

Renters: Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) from landlord

Tuition expenses you paid to attend college (Form 1098-T)

Records of education expenses you paid for your children (K-12), daycare expenses (name, address and Tax ID or Social Security Number or provider)

Interest you paid on student loans (Form 1098-E)

Records of charitable contributions
