Twenty-four students ventured to New York City January 4-11, 2009 to study culture and business practices in the Big Apple. Students observed the organized chaos of trading oil futures on the floor of The New York Mercantile Exchange and engaged in a discussion on trading and product development with Dan Brusstar, Director of Energy Research at the NYMEX. Bruce Ewing, partner at Dorsey Whitney Law Offices, hosted the students for afternoon snacks and sodas while he lectured on trademark and copyright law. Sample packaging, branding, and music cases were used to demonstrate trademark/copyright violations. The Pool of Tears, a memorial to American Express employees who lost their lives in the World Trade Center, was especially moving to many of the students. Patrick, a World Trade Center employee who survived 911, spoke to the group about his experience that day. He brought to life the story told by the exhibits in the Ground Zero Museum. The students also toured Madison Square Garden, the Federal Reserve Bank, NBC Studios, the United Nations, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Six a.m. came a little early but everyone smiled for the cameras and said "Hi Mom and Dad" on the NBC Today show Thursday morning. Everyone enjoyed the Tony award winning musical, In The Heights. Dinner at Ellen's Stardust Diner included an array of music performed by the wait staff, who are all actors/actresses trying to make their way to Broadway. Other entertainment included a dinner at Langan's Irish Restaurant, and shopping in China Town and 5th Avenue. Students broke into smaller groups and either attended a New York Rangers hockey game or a Broadway production of Spring Awakening or Phantom of the Opera. Linda Anglin, Department of Marketing and International Business, accompanied the students on the trip. The next tour is scheduled for January 3-10, 2010.
