Admission to the College of Business typically occurs at the beginning of the student's junior year. Once admitted, the student may choose to pursue a degree in one or more of the following majors: Accounting, Finance, International Business, Management, or Marketing. Multiple criteria will be considered for admission to the College of Business. Admission is competitive; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Deadlines for application are: October 1 for Spring Semester and March 1 for Fall Semester.
There is a list of organizations, their presidents, and how you can contact each of them in the College of Business Advising Center. The clubs that are recognized through COSBO (College of Student Business Organizations) are Accounting, Delta Sigma Pi, Finance/Financial Planning, HRM (Human Resource Management), IBO (International Business Organization), IS (Information Systems), Marketing Club and Advertising Club.
AACSB stands for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB accreditation is recognition that the college is providing students with a forward-looking, dynamic business education. It also signifies that the college's business programs have met a standard of excellence that truly distinguishes them. Of more than 1,200 business schools in North America, only 335 have successfully completed the rigorous accreditation process. Minnesota State University, Mankato is one of only four AACSB accredited programs in the state of Minnesota.
Second Year Experience is a required seminar for admission to the College of Business. This workshop is a non-tuition course. Second Year Experience requires students to submit a four year academic plan. Topics covered in the course include: admission to programs in the College of Business, student organizations, majors, minors, internships, career outlook, and out of class opportunities.
You should see the Advising Center or your Department Chair to review the course for possible substitution. The Advising Center's phone number is (507) 389-2963. Be sure to bring a completed transfer evaluation from the Office of the Registrar.
Global Business Concepts, MRKT 100, is a course that focuses on the basic business functions of Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing. This class provides students a review of each field of study to help students understand the business world in a broad sense. This course also fits into category 5 of general education.
You should take Personal Adjustment to Business during the latter part of your junior year at MSU. This class focuses on preparing your resume and credential file, interviewing, recruiting, cover letters, and networking.
The purpose of the IT Initiative is to give students access to technology and global sources of information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our goal is for our graduates to be both personally and professionally computer literate. To accomplish these objectives, all students who are completing a major in the College of Business are required to purchase a notebook computer with a standard set of applications from the Campus Computer Store at MSU. Notebooks may be purchased at the store or on the COB web site at www.cob.mnsu.edu; click "IT Initiative".
The notebook is available for the student's personal and academic use. Students should not expect to use the notebook every day during every class because it may not be the appropriate tool for learning in every class. In classes where the notebook is the appropriate tool, in-class usage will be high. In other classes, the notebook may not be used other than to take notes or complete homework assignments. The IT Initiative will help students learn about appropriate use of technology: where and when it should/should not be used; ethics of usage; and e-mail etiquette.
Students are required to take a minimum of 44 semester credit hours in general education courses and fulfill the General Education categories. For more information consult the general education requirement sheet. All transfer students should see an advisor upon arrival at MSU. MSU will honor the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum offered at other institutions. Transcript evaluations are completed by the Office of the Registrar. If there are any additional requirements the students must complete, it will help to know them while planning any advanced work.
If the minimum number of credits of general education is reached or if the Minnesota transfer curriculum has been completed, the general education requirement should be satisfied.
Domestic Cultural Diversity courses study the diverse components of United States culture in order to offer an understanding of the history and culture of ethnically diverse groups; majority/minority relations; civil rights; and other economic, political, social, and educational issues surrounding such pluralism. This study of Cultural Diversity emphasizes understanding the dynamics of race, gender, sexual orientation, age class, and disabilities.
Students pursuing a baccalaureate degree must take at least two (2) courses (one must be a core class) and a minimum of six (6) credits from the list of courses designated as Cultural Diversity. Two types of courses fulfill the Cultural Diversity requirement: Cultural Diversity CORE courses (CD-Core) and Cultural Diversity Related Courses (CD-related).
